Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests
I converted this photograph into black and white, while retaining the existing red elements, of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (祈年殿).
Built in 1420, the hall was hit by lightning during the reign of Guangxu in 1889 and a faithful reproduction based on Ming architectural methods was erected the following year.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is filled with numerological symbolism. It has four inner pillars, representing the four seasons, 12 middle pillars, symbolising the 12 months, and 12 outer pillars, representing the 12 Chinese watches of the day. This magnificent round building is made entirely of wood without the use of a single nail or cement - quite an accomplishment.
